About six months ago I joined a gym for the first time in my life. I had always hated the idea but due to a knee injury I was forced to look for other forms exercise. After a month or two I actually, unexpectedly, found myself enjoying being in a gym and training. However, I very quickly realised that I had no idea what I was doing! So I went looking for some one to help. That’s where Ryan came in.
Our first session it became apparent that there was a lot to work on – particularly squats, I couldn’t squat. In fact I already knew this from traveling in countries where toilets are simply holes in the ground – meaning that using them without the ability to squat is quite a test. As embarressing as this was, Ryan was patient and positive towards the problem and came up with a tailored plan from stretches to exercises to build a path to a successful squat. So, it went from something I was almost ashamed of to a challenge to overcome, and here we are 4 months later and I can now squat – albeit with a few props but now the movement is programmed and Ryan has taught me what needs to be done to increase mobility to, over time, perfect this movement. So next time I find myself caught short in the wilderness with no little boys room in sight – I’ll be prepared!
Squats aside, I found Ryan’s approach to training easy to understand, patient and thoughtful, as well as feeling pushed to challenge myself. Thanks to his depth of knowledge I feel I now have the ground work in place to walk into a gym with the confidence that I will not only stay safe and get fitter, but also that I am there for the right reasons – mind and body!
On a slightly shallower level, I have dropped a good amount of fat and even in this short period of time I have noticed my body shape change to something I feel more confident walking around in!
